Darnell H. Schoelzel, age 87, of Colby, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at his home.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Christ Lutheran Church in Abbotsford.  Rev. Shawn Andersen will officiate.  Military Honors provided by the Colby VFW Post #2227 and Unity American Legion Post#38. Family and friends are welcome from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12 at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford and from 10:00 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.

Darnell was born on September 28, 1932, the son of Rudolph and Olivia (Gutenberger) Schoelzel in Colby.  He attended Cloverdale School in rural Colby.  Darnell was drafted into the U. S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.  He was united in marriage to Janice M. Gaetz on April 13, 1957 in Iowa.  Together they farmed in the Town of Colby retiring in 2006.  Their farm became a Century Farm in 1993.  Darnell also was a cheese maker and milk hauler.

Darnell never lost the love of farming.  He loved animals, especially horses.  Darnell enjoyed visiting neighbors on his four-wheeler.  Most importantly, he cherished his family.

Darnell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice; his daughter, Julie Schoelzel of Neillsville and his son Duane (Rhonda) Schoelzel of Marathon; six grandchildren: Shannon (Brady) Salter, Ryan Schoelzel, Brooke (Ray) Krause, Britny (Riley) Knack, Stephanie Schoelzel (Adam Lemmer) and Shayne Schoelzel (Fiancée, Emily Nikolai); four great-grandchildren: Trey Schoelzel, Brynleigh Krause, Moutrie and Bode Salter.  He is further survived by one brother and four sisters; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, David and Donald “Shorty” Schoelzel; 15 brothers and sisters.
