Irene O. Halverson

Irene Odessa Halverson, age 99, of Crandon, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 15, 2018 at The Bay at Nu-Roc Nursing Home, Blackwell. Irene was born in Dane County on October 6, 1918 the daughter of Ingvall and Estella (Retrum) Nelson.
Irene graduated for the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1942. After graduation, she took Civil Service exams and worked at the Veterans Administration National Service Life Insurance during WWII in the New York City office. In March 1944 she met Carl Halverson and they were married on August 4. 1944 in Mobile, AL.
After Carl was discharged from the U.S. Navy they moved to Minneapolis where Carl started on his BS degree in Business and the University of Minnesota and she was employed as a Supervisor of Banquets and Parties at Coffman Memorial Union at the University of Minnesota. After Carl received his business degree they returned to Merrill, Wisconsin and she was a Home Agent for Lincoln County before coming to Crandon in 1949 to be a partner in their Funeral Home business and Ambulance Service.
She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid of the church, member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #94, past president of Ladies Aid American Legion Auxiliary, Crandon Woman’s Club, and Forest County Federation of Woman’s Clubs.
Irene was a dietary consultant for both Forest County nursing homes for several years. She helped established programs for the handicapped in Forest County. She was Forest County Chairman of Committee to raise funds for the Tri County facility now known as Headwaters, Inc., Rhinelander. She also served on its first advisory board. She served six years on the advisory board for Retired Senior Volunteer Programs “RSVP” for Forest, Vilas, Lincoln and Oneida counties.
Irene served for three years as the first Woman Alderperson on the City of Crandon Council.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Ann Halverson, Rhinelander; sons, John (Jane) Halverson, Sheboygan and Paul (Debbie) Halverson, DePere; grandchildren, Jennifer, David (Charla), Ian (Sarah), Brett, Paul and Anthony; great grandchildren, Landon, Brody, Tanner and Lexi. Further survived by brothers, Gerald (Beverly) Nelson, Herbert (Emma) Nelson, Clifford (Arlene) Nelson and Rolf (Claudia) Nelson and beloved sister-in-law, Ruth Halverson, Florida.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl; three sisters and one brother.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Crandon. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon with Pastor Sam Pappenfuss officiating. Interment will be at Crandon Lakeside Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at
