William M. Byers, Jr.
William M. Byers, Jr., age 92, of Park Falls, WI died Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Lakeview Medical
Center in Rice Lake, WI. He was born on March 7, 1926 in Marshalltown, IA to William M. Byers, Sr. and
Edna (Murphy) Byers. Bill graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1944 and entered the United
States Army, serving in the European theatre during WWII. He was honorably discharged in June, 1946
and entered Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He married Claribel Havens in 1948. To this union were
born seven children. After graduating from Iowa State University majoring in Forestry, he worked in
various locations for the United States Forest Service, finally serving for 23 years in Park Falls. He retired
in 1988 as Acting Supervisor of the Chequamegon National Forest. Bill was a member of Faith Baptist
Church in Park Falls until it closed. He most recently attended Maranatha Baptist Church in Phillips, WI.
He enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling, having returned from an annual trip to Austria on June 15
of this year.
He is survived by five children, Eva (Falk) Minichshofer of Linz, Austria, Terri Towns of
Fredericksburg, VA, Christi (Ron) Lewis of Tipler, WI, Sarah (Steve) Svendsen of Rice Lake, WI, and
Melinda (Bill) Larson of Ashland, WI. Bill had 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Claribel, his parents, two sisters, two brothers, his daughters
Vicki and Mary, and his son Mark.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am. Tuesday, September 4, 2018
at the Novitzke Funeral Home Chapel in Park Falls, Rev. Steven Svendsen officiating.
Burial will follow at Nola Cemetery in Park Falls
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00am until the hour of the service.
