Lyla Jane McDonough (93) of Nelson, WI died Sunday, April 22, 2018 at St. Elizabeth’s Care Center in Wabasha, MN. She was born December 4, 1924 in Fillmore County, MN; daughter of Melvin and Olga (Hanson) Magnuson. She attended school in rural Houston, MN. She worked as a waitress in LaCrosse.
On October 28, 1945 she married Howard McDonough in Wabasha. They lived in Nelson then moved to Wabasha. Lyla worked as a cook at Idle Hour in Wabasha. In 1953 they moved to Maxville Township where they farmed for 44 years and Lyla helped care for the Gifford Family. She worked at the Anchor Inn in Wabasha and Lake City, Lake Side Canning in Plainview and Huntzinger Horseradish in Mondovi. Howard died September 13, 1996, the following year Lyla moved to Nelson.
Lyla loved to embroider, cook and do quilting and was known for her Rosettes. She was a member of Lyster Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir and served as treasurer of WELCA.
She is survived by her sons, Dennis (Darlene) of Nelson, WI, Howard (Sara) Jr. of Chippewa Falls, WI, LeRoy (Hope) of Minneapolis, MN and Richard (Letha) of Menomonie, WI; eight grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister, Maxine Petrick of Clover Dale, CA; brothers, Robert Magnuson of Red Wing, MN and Melvin (Darlene) Magnuson of Wabasha.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson, Brian McDonough and two sisters, Mary Fuchs and Kathryn Rostvold.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at Lyster Lutheran Church in rural Nelson with Pastor Michael Vetsch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
